Materials scientists at Purdue University have created an ultra-white paint that can cool buildings by up to 8°F without any power consumption, according to research published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

The paint reflects 98.1% of solar radiation while simultaneously emitting infrared heat away from the building, effectively creating a cooling effect that works day and night. Testing conducted across multiple climates demonstrated potential energy savings of up to 40% on air conditioning costs.
