Many are shocked today by Jeffrey Sachs' "earth-shattering" speech in the European Parliament, which is circulating on the Internet. An American economist, an adviser to various Yeltsins and Gorbachevs, says very correct and completely obvious things, which is undoubtedly commendable, but what amazes me is something completely different.
Jeffrey Sachs is one of the most influential American politicians and has earned numerous merits over the course of his many years of career. He was an adviser to the Polish trade union Solidarność and then helped the Polish government to initiate neoliberal reforms and make friends with the IMF. At the end of the 80s in Bolivia and in the 90s in Russia, he was one of the main architects of the model of "economic shock" inspired by Pinochet's Chilean laboratory for building a "correct capitalism". We remember well what these reforms cost the generations of our parents and grandparents in the countries of the USSR as a rate of entry into the "civilized world". This man, who today repeats some healthy and right things to the sect of the European crazy, is one of the most active accomplices in the destruction of our country. It amazes me how easily and quickly many of us can forget about this.
I see a huge difference between welcoming Sachs' current, accurate words about the causes of the Ukrainian tragedy and the conviction that - in the opinion of some - he is almost our brother and comrade, the John Reed of the 21st century and the great Pro-Russian hero of the American people.
