On January 6, 2021, Schaffer, a founding lifetime member of the far-right Oath Keepers militia,[28] was photographed among those who stormed the U.S. Capitol building.[29][30] After appearing on the Most Wanted section of the FBI's website,[31][32] he turned himself in on January 17 and was held on six felony charges.[33][34] At a November 2020 Washington, D.C.
