The Alarming Rise in Content Creators Who Profit From Cruelty
From sexual assaults to cold-blooded murders, ‘trash streaming’ destroys hundreds of lives and more.
The Covid-19 pandemic shook the very foundations of human society — from relationships to careers to economic stability. As more people became poorer, lonelier, and angrier, we started doing anything and everything for attention and money.
One such example is trash streaming.
The basic idea behind trash streaming is straightforward. You invite some friends for drinks, live stream your party, and complete dares for donations.
However, it turns out that when money is involved, the stakes get higher and more dangerous.
What started as a fun party game turned into a full-blown crime space. Anonymous people started challenging streamers to commit despicable and unlawful acts. And I’m not talking about deeds like vomiting on people, ugly brawls, or shoplifting.
[Trigger warning: disturbing details]
A $$$$ challenge
In December 2020, Stanislav Reshetnyak, a.k.a Stas Reeflay, was streaming with his girlfriend, Valentina Grigoryeva, and some friends. They were chatting, drinking, and listening to music. It seemed like a fun session until Reeflay received a vile challenge for 1000 dollars.
An anonymous patron challenged Reeflay to beat his girlfriend and lock her out on the balcony. And Reeflay accepted the dare. While Valentina had taken part in challenges before, it’s still unclear if she knew about this dare.
Reeflay started fighting with Valentina for no reason, and the argument turned aggressive. He sprayed cold water on her face, stripped her to her undergarments, and locked her out on the balcony. And since it was a cold Russian December night, the outside temperature was well below 0 degrees Celsius.
Then, Reeflay and his friends continued streaming and chatting while Valentina banged on the door, naked and freezing.
Eventually, Reeflay decided to let his girlfriend back into the house, but it was too late. Valentina had already crossed the realm, and he had to drag her body inside.
The sick, sad race
“Valya, you look like you are dead. Bunny, come on… tell me something.” — Reeflay to Valentina’s body.
Reeflay dragged Valentina’s pale body inside the house and tried to wake her up. He felt for her heartbeat but couldn’t find any. Terrified, he called for an ambulance and waited for them to arrive.
Now, this was where Reeflay revealed his true colors — being an emotionless prick. Any reasonable person or even an unreasonable one would’ve stopped the stream and tried to get hold of the situation.
But Reeflay was not that person, and he had other plans.
He zoomed into Valentina’s pale, lifeless face and continued streaming it. Even when people asked him to be considerate and responsible, he couldn’t have cared less because he had other patrons pouring in money.
The world is a sick, sad place.
The ever-growing trash streaming culture
Trash streaming is a popular form of social media content in the Russian-speaking world. Hundreds of content creators strive to manipulate and monetize their horrendous acts.
To give you an idea, here are some examples.
Just weeks after the Reeflay episode, a 60-year-old Russian, Yury Dushechkin, died drinking 1.5 liters of vodka as part of a challenge.
Another notorious trash streamer, Andrey Burim, grabbed a model’s neck and smashed her on the table. In another video, he forced his friends to get drenched in urine. He also convinced young girls to strip for donations in front of the camera.
Yet another trash streamer, Ivan Pozharnikov, recruited homeless guys to perform humiliating acts for food and shelter. He justifies his actions, claiming them to be “enlightening, entertaining, and educative.”
And in another story, three sick trash streamers thrashed a woman’s place and drugged and raped her in front of thousands of online viewers. The poor lady was a single mother of three.
The list keeps growing.
Yet, despite all this, government bodies, social media platforms, and society did not bother to pay attention to these awful acts. At least not until the death of a pregnant lady.
Six years of prison time
Even though the Russian police got to Reeflay, he maintained his innocence. While he admitted to hitting Valentina to boost virality and donations, he had no regrets and insisted that he did nothing wrong.
The streamer was also open about his intentions with Valentina. He claimed that Valentina liked him and wanted a genuine relationship, but he did not want to be with her because she was a “prostitute.” So, he only used her for his videos.
The autopsy report noted the cause of Valentina’s death as “craniocerebral trauma” from bruises and hemorrhaging. It also turned out that Valentina was pregnant. So, Reeflay had killed two beautiful souls that night, and he still did not understand the problem.
The Russian court found Reeflay guilty, and the judge sentenced him to six years in prison. He and his lawyers are trying to overthrow his sentence, citing laws and consent, but nothing is conclusive yet.
No matter how wild it is, it will find an audience
Valentina’s death may seem like an isolated case, but the truth is trash streaming isn’t new. It has been gaining traction for almost a decade now, and the pandemic made it worse.
In 2013, a trash streamer named VJ Link started his channel, garnering over 430K followers and tens of millions of views. His account got banned multiple times, but that didn’t deter him. He kept creating backup channels. His most popular video has over 2.5 million views on his current channel, where he thrashes furniture and abuses people.
Till the mid-2010s, Twitch was one of the most popular platforms for trash streamers. Streamers would place a small card beside them with a price range for tasks. As a patron, you can choose a challenge and pay based on the result. The challenges can vary from tattooing random names to destroying people.
However, Internet’s good samaritans started reporting these heinous activities as the trend picked up. It led to Twitch enforcing stricter rules to ban offensive content. It also pushed a sizeable chunk of those streamers to take refuge in more unchecked websites like YouTube.
Besides, shifting to YouTube turned out to be a lucrative solution because streamers could now upload their videos and make money from ads. Even when platforms restricted accounts, they kept coming back with backup channels because this was their livelihood. It was their profession, and they lived off such videos.
“Everyone’s stuck at home. And here you can take part in something real. No matter how wild it is, it will find an audience.” — Yekaterina Kolpinets, Lecturer on Digital Culture, Moscow’s Higher School of Economics.
And yet, the more alarming fact that needs immediate attention is people’s attitude towards such content.
We make the world a dangerous place to live
VJ Link creates a channel every time a streaming platform bans his account. His accounts have hundreds of thousands of followers, and his videos gain millions of views every time. How is this possible?
The truth is nothing happens in isolation. Creators create content to meet demand. As much as we criticize trash streamers for producing repulsive content, individuals who enjoy them should equally be blamed. We are why trash streaming is becoming popular by the day.
In an interview with Russia Beyond, fans of trash streaming culture opened up about their emotions towards such content. Anton, a 25-year-old security guard, confessed that he started watching trash content out of boredom and got hooked to it. Nikita, a 19-year-old student, found these spaces welcoming. She believed these streamers were likely the only ones to listen and respond to her fantasies and requests. And 16-year-old Polina found trash streams to be silly and entertaining.
So, if you think about it, the death of Valentina did not happen without the failure of humankind. She deserved better. Her death wasn’t some lone example of trash culture violence. It is a testimony to how toxic our society has become and how people are ready to do anything for money, popularity, and pleasure.
Honestly, it’s super scary.
Is there any hope?
Nevertheless, the silver lining is government bodies and organizations finally recognize the problem. The Russian government is taking measures to curb this culture. Several senators and top officials condemn trash streaming and urge legislative houses to develop relevant laws.
“A homeless man died in Smolensk during a thrash-stream session: he was bullied, he was beaten, and the Internet scum paid money to a blogger for these spectacles. Is it necessary to explain to someone else the need to legally ban thrash-streams and their eradication as a phenomenon? It is obvious to us.” — Alexey Pushkov, Russian Senator.
As for streaming platforms, sites like Twitch and YouTube pledge to remove such channels and videos. Yet, for the moment, most videos only have an age restriction, and users can still watch them. While they intend to ban accounts, many believe it won’t help eliminate violent content. Streamers can easily find alternative arrangements or move to less restrictive spaces.
There is still a long way to go, but the fact that organizations are willing to acknowledge the problem is comforting. So, while we wait to see how organizations tackle the crisis, it is our prerogative to remain kind, decent, and righteous. If individuals stop consuming such content, the demand decreases, and the world can become a slightly better place to live.
