A jury in Chicago found the actor Jussie Smollett guilty on Thursday of falsely reporting to the police that he had been the victim of a racist and homophobic assault in 2019, an attack that investigators presented as a hoax directed by the actor himself.

After deliberating for more than nine hours, the 12-person jury indicated that it had chosen to believe the accounts of two brothers who testified that Mr. Smollett had asked them to mildly injure him as part of a publicity stunt.

The case dated back to the frigid early hours of Jan. 29, 2019, when Mr. Smollett — known then for his role in the Fox music-industry drama “Empire” — told the police that he had been the victim of a hate crime near his apartment building in Chicago. At the time, the report, which involved one of Mr. Smollett’s attackers yelling “This is MAGA country,” captured the attention of a politically polarized nation concerned with rising hate crime reports and the persistent threat of racism.

Prosecutors argued in court that Mr. Smollett had instructed two brothers, Abimbola Osundairo and Olabinjo Osundairo, on all of the details, specifying that they punch him hard enough to create a bruise but not hard enough to injure him, and to pour bleach on his clothing and place a rope around his neck like a noose.

Mr. Smollett was convicted of five counts of disorderly conduct related to filing a false police report on Jan. 29, the day of the attack, and acquitted of one count related to a follow-up interview he did with police about the attack on Feb. 14.

After the verdict was read, Mr. Smollett sat upright in his chair, hands clasped, staring directly at the jury.

The special prosecutor in the case, Daniel K. Webb, told the jury that Mr. Smollett staged the attack because he had received a hate-filled death threat in the mail and was upset by the muted response of the producers behind the television show on which he starred, “Empire.”

Mr. Webb argued there were several points of Mr. Smollett’s account that did not make sense: that the Osundairo brothers would know exactly what intersection Mr. Smollett would pass through and when; that Mr. Smollett would initially report his attacker as white when he knew Abimbola Osundairo, who is Black, well; and that Mr. Smollett would refuse to turn over his phone and a saliva sample to the police.

“Mr. Smollett didn’t want the crime solved,” Mr. Webb said during his closing argument on Wednesday. “He wanted to report it as a hate crime; he wanted media exposure; but he didn’t want the brothers apprehended.”

The defense argued that the police made a rush to judgment in accusing Mr. Smollett of orchestrating the attack and that the Osundairo brothers had lied to protect themselves from prosecution.

In 2019, it appeared that Mr. Smollett would not have to go to trial after prosecutors dropped the charges against him ( ), but Mr. Webb revived the charges last year.

Mr. Smollett, who was found guilty of felony disorderly conduct in connection with the false report, is facing a possible sentence of up to three years in prison.

Judge James B. Linn said Mr. Smollett would not be kept in custody before sentencing; no sentencing date was set.
