Dear Readers,
Usually in this email I try to include a dash of levity and a pinch of the irreverent spirit that makes POLITICO such a pleasure to read and edit. This week, however, the two main topics I want to highlight are deadly serious.
Wednesday marked six months since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The date also happened to be Ukraine’s National Day. We marked it with a focus on human stories with the latest installment of our Refugee Diaries project.
The other thing I want to mention is the disgraceful treatment of my colleague and POLITICO contributor Nektaria Stamouli. A brave and distinguished reporter based in Greece, Nektaria was subjected to a torrent of abuse this week. The vitriol was encouraged, if not instigated, by erroneous statements from a government spokesman and senior advisers to the Greek government. It is almost as if the authorities have resolved to prove her reporting right.
Having spent most of my journalistic career in an authoritarian (trending totalitarian) state (China), I know firsthand the dangers and pressures facing journalists who dare to commit proper journalism. I am proud of Nektaria’s work for us and I call on the Greek government to do far more to uphold the values of free speech and press freedom they claim to espouse.
Until next week,
Jamil Anderlini
