Passions are running high across India as a bitterly-fought general election nears its climax. The frenzy was too much for one man, who cut off his own finger after realising that he had mistakenly voted for the ruling party.

Pawan Kumar was so distressed by his vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of the prime minister, Narendra Modi, that he went home and took a knife to the offending finger, which had been marked with indelible ink to show that he had voted.
