EC president to visit Warsaw on Thursday

The new President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen will pay a visit to Warsaw on Thursday and meet with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller said on Tuesday.

The talks in Warsaw are expected to focus on the staffing of EC positions, as well as the implementation of the commission's strategic agenda, the government spokesman told a press briefing.

"The plan is quite clear in terms of personnel issues," Muller said, as it is important for Poland to get a good portfolio at the EC "so that our Commissioner plays a really important role in the EU". Among the areas favoured by the Polish government for the Polish commissioner would be economy, free market, energy, budget or agriculture, he added.

He added that it is also essential how the new EC will be divided among countries in terms of the staffing and Poland would strive for "the geographic balance" in this respect.

"It is important for us that the countries which effectively implement our interests will get the most important portfolios," Muller said.

Morawiecki and von der Leyen will also discuss implementation of new strategic goals for the EC for the years 2019-2024, adopted by the European Council on June 20.

"These include issues related to the expansion of the Single Market and thus the departure from protectionism in some areas, including transport, as well as matters linked to fair energy transition, climate policy goals and change in the way energy is produced," the government spokesperson said.

Το θέμα είναι απλό. Η ευαίσθητη Ευρώπη δεν υπάρχει πια, αντικατασταθηκε. Πλέον η Ευρώπη - φρούριο είναι η επίσημη πολιτική.

Επομένως οι οποίες δηλώσεις είναι είτε για να σωθούν κάποια προσχήματα...

Orban confirmed on Thursday that von der Leyen is "sensitive" to issues such as migration, and also in this respect "she is able to think with central Europeans' head".


After Thursday's meeting, Orban remained cautious, saying "we'll see what happens next", but added: "today there is a greater chance of a reasonable solution than before or with any other candidate".

He said von der Leyen told him she wants to focus not on the issues that divide member states, such as the distribution of migrants, but rather on issues where a positive outcome is possible, like external border protection.
