The efforts that were made to set things right ideologically, politically, and organizationally, which constituted a fundamental negation of the Cultural Revolution, shared the common goal of rectifying the “Left” mistakes that had long been present in the CPC. However, as efforts to correct “Left” mistakes continued, Right tendencies began to emerge. In essence, these political tendencies were directed against the Four Cardinal Principles, especially CPC’s leadership and the socialist path. As had been the case when he rectified “Left” mistakes, Deng showed no hesitation on this major matter of principle, fully demonstrating his political insight and resolve. Taking a clear-cut stance, he stated that the Four Cardinal Principles had to be upheld ideologically and politically, and that opposition to these principles from the Right had to be criticized.
