After Alaric stormed the West,
And Rome itself was sacked,
A single light was held abreast
To keep the Roman pact.
But a millennium later that last opal
The holy city of Constantinople
Its Greek fire quenched and gold mosaics frayed
Huddled in Justinian’s Church and prayed.
The last Roman Emperor stood at the wall
That Theodosius had built tall
And told his men – tears streaking his cheeks
“Be brave; descendants of Romans and Greeks.”
The conquerors simper,
The wolfs bare their fang,
This is the way Rome’s Empire ends -
Not with a whimper but a bang.
