San Francisco to Honor 200th Anniversary of Greek War of Independence

To honor the 200th Anniversary of the 1821 Greek War of Independence, San Francisco City Hall will be illuminated with the colors of the Greek flag on March 25.

The initiative belongs to the United Hellenic American Societies (UHAS) representing Greek Americans in California and the efforts of Taso Zografos, President of the United Hellenic American Societies of Northern California (UHAS).

“Our Greek community in California is working together in unison to pay tribute to those who stood up to tyranny, sacrificed their lives in the fight against oppression, and bravely liberated Greece from occupation” said UHAS President Taso Zografos.

“Hellenes and Philhellenes around the world continue to stand united in defense of freedom and liberty for all.”

In collaboration with the Greek Consulate in San Francisco, UHAS worked with the Office of the Mayor of San Francisco London Breed to have the Greek flag raised on March 25th and to remain flown for five consecutive days during Greek Heritage Week that runs from March 19-28, 2021.

“We appreciate the Mayor’s actions to support the Greek community during this unprecedent time affecting our ability to fully celebrate this important event” said Taso Zografos.

“Now our families will be able to drive down to safely enjoy seeing our Greek flag raised high at City Hall in San Francisco”.

San Francisco buildings may honor Greek War of Independence

UHAS is currently in discussions to also have the historic landmark Coit Tower and the S.F. Ferry Building to be illuminated in blue and white colors and with the Salesforce Tower to have its top Public Art Light Show to display the Greek flag in lights.

At the California State’s capital city Sacramento, discussions are underway to light up the City’s Memorial Building and in Southern California to also light up the City Halls in Los Angeles and San Diego in blue and white colors.

UHAS is a non-profit entity that was first established in 1954 to promote, preserve, and protect Greek culture, heritage, and tradition through strong community relations.

UHAS serves as the lead organization for coordinating the annual Epiphany Blessing of the Waters, Greek Independence Day, and OXI Day events.

Με την ευκαιρία της επετείου των 200 ετών από την Ελληνική Επανάσταση, η Μασαχουσέτη θα φωταγωγήσει με μπλε χρώμα τις πέντε πιο εμβληματικές γέφυρες της Πολιτείας, δύο γέφυρες ορόσημα της Βοστώνης και ακόμα τρεις, σε πόλεις με ιστορικές ελληνοαμερικανικές κοινότητες που εγκαταστάθηκαν στην Πολιτεία.

Ως ένδειξη σεβασμού και εκτίμησης στην Ελλάδα και τους Έλληνες η Πολιτεία ανακήρυξε την 25η Μαρτίου 2021 ως Ημέρα Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας.

Η επίσημη πράξη είναι ένα κείμενο και αναδεικνύει τον σεβασμό και την εκτίμηση που τρέφουν ο Κυβερνήτης και οι αρχές της Μασσαχουσέτης για την Ελλάδα

Το Προξενείο της Βοστώνης και ο επικεφαλής του, Στράτος Ευθυμίου, σε συνεργασία με τις αρχές της Πολιτείας και όλους τους φορείς της ομογένειας διοργανώνουν μια σειρά από εκδηλώσεις τιμής ανήμερα της μεγάλης επετείου. Οι εορτασμοί θα ξεκινήσουν από το ναό της Αγίας Τριάδας, στην ιστορική ελληνική κοινότητα του Λόουελ, την επονομαζόμενη και ως “Ακρόπολη της Αμερικής” από τα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα. Στη Βοστώνη θα φωταγωγηθεί μπλε η μεγαλύτερη γέφυρα της πόλης, η Zakim bridge, δίπλα στο TD Garden, το ιστορικό γήπεδο των Boston Celtics.

H δεύτερη γέφυρα που θα φωταγωγηθεί μπλε είναι η Longfellow, σχεδιασμένη από τον μεγάλo Βοστωνέζο αρχιτέκτονα Edmund Wheelwright, τον άνθρωπο που άφησε τη σφραγίδα του στην αρχιτεκτονική φυσιογνωμία της πόλης και σχεδίασε στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα το κτίριο του Γενικού Προξενείου της Ελλάδας στη Βοστώνη στην οδό Beacon 86.

Η ελληνική κοινότητα της Βοστώνης θα τιμήσει στη συνέχεια τους μεγάλους Αμερικανούς Φιλέλληνες Σάμιουελ Γκρίντλεϊ Χάου και Έβερετ, σε ειδική τελετή στο νεκροταφείο του Μάουντ Όμπουρν.

Τo πρόγραμμα φωταγώγησης στα ελληνικά χρώματα επεκτείνεται σε όλη τη Νέα Αγγλία. Στο Rhode Island η φωταγώγηση των γεφυρών Pawtucket στο Interstate Route 95 και Sakonnet River Bridge Route 24 θα διαρκέσει για μία εβδομάδα, ενώ στα μπλε θα φωταγωγηθεί το Westminster Street Building στο Providence όπως και το Κυβερνείο του Rhode Island. Στο New Hampshire θα γίνει φωταγώγηση στο Δημαρχείο της πρωτεύουσας της Πολιτείας, Manchester, καθώς και σε δύο γέφυρες της Πολιτείας.

Wounded Beirut lights up blue and white for Greek Independence Day

With the bicentenary anniversary since the Greek Struggle for Independence, the Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock museum in Beirut was symbolically lighted with the colours of the Greek flag.

This important anniversary for Greece coincides with the centenary of the Greek Community of Beirut which has long been a strong connecting link between the two friendly countries.

Greek ambassador to Lebanon Catherine Fountoulaki stated during the ceremony that “the Sursock museum, which has been through so many hardships, is the very symbol of Lebanon’s will to survive and strive for its ideals.”

“It is the same spirit that has always driven the Greeks historically in close contact with the Lebanese through shared values and affinities,” she added.

Lebanon’s Capital, Beirut, is still suffering from the devastating explosion that occurred on the city’s port on August 4 last year.

The museum that was lit with the Greek flag was one of the most severely damaged building and is currently under restoration.
