In the Latin church,
Sancta Sophia (Holy Wisdom) is a traditional title for Christ and the Holy Spirit. The largest cathedral (now desecrated) in the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church (and I really mean the One Church) is named Hagia Sophia, the Wisdom of God, a feminine name.
Of course, God has no gender. Jesus Christ, fully God and fully human, was male, but God himself is transcendent. The catechism (CCC #239) says:
While I don’t think this is applicable to this image, I learned recently that
in the Middle Ages it was common to portray Jesus as a mother because some of his qualities (like nurturing) were associated with motherhood. I find it so interesting to see different depictions of Jesus.
