A surge in violence across America – including record numbers of murders and a wave of riots and looting in cities like Portland, Oregon, and Kenosha, Wisconsin – has led America to a tipping point. So much so, in fact, that former Vice President Joe Biden felt compelled to address it in a speech on Monday.

Speaking in Pittsburgh, Biden condemned the violence taking place across the country. Then he went one step further, flipping the script and laying the blame for it directly at President Trump’s feet.

"It's getting worse, and you know why: because Donald Trump has fueled every fire. Because he refused to even acknowledge that there is a racial justice problem in America. Because he won't stand up to any form of violence," the 2020 Democratic nominee said on Monday. Earlier in the day, he tweeted a similar message: “Does anyone believe there will be less violence in America if Donald Trump is reelected?”

That’s a complicated question to answer. But to understand where to find blame in all of this, it must be asked: who stands to gain the most from the social and civil unrest?

The answer to that largely depends on how you view President Trump. If you support or have a sympathetic view of him, it seems rational to believe that Democrats have the most to gain from the unrest. It undermines Trump’s central claim of being a “law and order” president, and on top of that, puts Trump and the GOP in the tough position of defending America’s current social status quo (the GOP will never concede that America is racist because, in their view, it hurts America’s claim to being the greatest country). For context, presidential approval hit its lowest point of the year – 38% – in June, following the death of George Floyd. If Trump doesn’t have a handle on governing the country, why should he be elected for a second term?

On the other hand, if you are a critic of the president, it appears feasible that Trump and the GOP have the most to gain. By keeping the country divided, Trump pins the violence on Democrats, scaring moderates and further entrenching his base’s support. As CNN’s Don Lemon warned last week, rioting is “showing up in polling” and “showing up in focus groups,” urging that the “rioting has to stop” because “it is the only thing right now that is sticking.” This admission by Lemon, while unsurprising, was the first domino to fall, leading all the way to Biden’s Monday speech condemning the violence.

What’s crazy about these competing theories is that both can be true. Each side has something to gain from the unrest, which means there’s little – if any – incentive to end it. It’s no longer an issue that needs to be dealt with, but rather one that each side can extort for political benefit at America’s expense.

That being said, Biden’s belated speech could be seen as an admission of guilt; an acknowledgement that he should have condemned the rioting more forcefully earlier. To borrow a phrase from the Left, “white silence is violence.”

And his silence is only half the story: even if Biden was silent, his campaign staff and now-running mate, Kamala Harris, certainly were not.

When protesters were being arrested by the hundreds in June, Harris, then yet to become Biden’s running mate, and Biden’s campaign staff promoted the Minnesota Freedom Fund (MFF). The MFF then received $35 million in donations to bail out protesters, including those charged with serious violent crimes.

MFF paid $75,000 in bail for Jaleel Stallings, charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing his modified pistol at a SWAT team. For the pre-trial release of Darnika Floyd, who faces second-degree murder charges for allegedly stabbing and killing her friend, MFF paid $100,000. And for Christopher Boswell, a twice-convicted rapist currently charged with kidnapping, assault, and sexual assault in two separate cases, MFF doled out a whopping $350,000.

The Minnesota Freedom Fund was just one group that didn’t take crime seriously in the lead-up to the current crime wave. Progressive groups also lobbied for the releases of thousands of convicted prisoners and inmates due to concerns over covid-19 in prisons. These included Ibrahim Bouiachi, indicted on charges of rape, strangulation, and abduction. While Democrats were advocating defunding the police, he returned to the home of his accuser, Karla Dominguez, and killed her in late July.

To be clear: MFF did not pay for Bouiachi’s release. Yet cases like his combine with the Left’s soft-on-crime policies and support of groups like MFF to make the Democrats look culpable for the current crime wave.

Trump might be divisive in his rhetoric, and the buck ultimately stops with him as president of the United States. But don’t ignore the sins of the Left and their significant contribution to the way things are now.

Δεν γίνεται ποτέ επανάσταση που όλοι οι επαναστάτες να είναι αγνοί ιδεολόγοι. Ο κύριος πυρήνας των επαναστατών είναι οι αθρώποι που δεν την παλεύουν. Είτε αντιμετωπίζουν πείνα, είτε ρατσισμό, είτε οτιδήποτε, βρίσκουν μια αφορμή και παλεύουν για αυτά που στερούνται, αλλά ο πυρήνας των ενεργειών της πλειονότητας των επαναστατημένων, το ισχυρότερο κίνητρό τους, είναι πάντα η πάρτη τους.

Κι αυτό είναι το σωστό.
