Looking back at history, European capitalism has been exploring between efficiency and fairness to constantly find points that lead to reforms. The European people chose a different path from that of the US - a path that emphasizes welfare and fair distribution. However, even under welfare capitalism, it does not change the nature of capitalism and its inherent flaws, which has inevitably led to the widening of the wealth gap.

It seems that the French people cannot find a way out now. Neither can the US. Capitalism seems to have reached a critical point, and although it will not disappear quickly, the future path is uncertain.

It doesn’t matter if you have ASML’s best EUV lithography tools from the Netherlands, some of the best etch and process tools from Japan, the best chip designers and IP, etc., if you don’t have access to software tools from these two American companies then all that other stuff is useless. There are literally no alternatives to the EDA software tools made by these two companies, which is why they often charge six figures per license.

Without licenses to their software you can’t really design any leading-edge chips because they are too complex to design manually, and a lack of serious competition for several decades has meant that the EDA industry is effectively a duopoly with vast daylight between these two and number 3.

As a user of some of their products, I can vouch that Synopsys and Cadence make outstanding high-quality products and provide great customer support. This makes it unlikely that engineers will want to use other competing products, and this just strengthens their hold on the market.
