Because of our past, people like me, who had ZERO say in Apartheid (I was a child during those years), still get blamed for it. We are labelled as racist by default, and seldom treated by our individual actions or according to personal merit. We are thus constantly walking on eggs. I don’t feel at home here, but I am as much a South African as anybody around me. If we complain about our useless and corrupt government, its always treated as if we must have some or other agenda by it, or that “we want apartheid to come back”, or that we are saying bad things only because they are not white. The race card gets played against us pretty much all the time. Whereas most of us were raised on a very meritocratic philosophy and this is how we judge people, based on merit.
Like I said, being a child during the Apartheid era, I have zero romantic ideas about it nor do I want it to come back, I just want to live in a country where everyone has the chance to prosper.
We only make up 8% of the population, and in other parts of the world, the rights of minority groups are protected. But because our ancestors benefited from apartheid, white people now (who had nothing to do with Apartheid) do not enjoy any minority rights. In fact, employment equity laws make it harder for white people to get work. So white people today feel they are being punished for something they did not do nor were responsible for. It makes us pretty miserable and mistrusting overall, and does nothing to bring about social cohesion of any kind. We are still blamed for “stealing their land”, but so many of us dont own property anyway, especially anybody under 30 these days.
I could not afford to go to university, I went to a technical college for three years instead, on a student loan. Since the end of apartheid, thousands of black students have finished university degrees. Whatever advantage I might have had, have long been corrected.
It’s been 25 year’s since Apartheid ended, and now our population are dwindling (the white people with the financial means are leaving the country, and birth rates have dropped). As a minority group, we dont pose any kind of threat, but we are still treated as such.
