‘Test a man’s character’ quote misattributed to Abraham Lincoln
By Reuters Fact Check
A popular phrase about testing a man’s character has been misattributed to the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.
“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power,” the alleged quote reads. Recent examples can be viewed here, here, here.
While the quote has long been circulating with the mistaken attribution, there is no record of Lincoln ever making such a statement.
“There is no evidence that Lincoln ever said this. The quote does not appear in any of the documents in our database, and it does not appear in The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln,” Daniel Worthington, Director of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln ( papersofabrahamlincoln.org/ ), told Reuters via email.
In 2016, Garson O’Toole, creator of website Quote Investigator ( quoteinvestigator.com/about/ ), traced the possible origin of the quote to something said by American politician Robert G. Ingersoll ( here ) about Lincoln.
“The famous orator and free thinker employed similar phrases when he was describing Lincoln,” O’Toole wrote ( here ).
In 2019 ( here ), Snopes accessed an archived version of the Wisconsin State Journal issue of Jan. 16, 1883 ( here ), which shows Ingersoll reportedly saying these words when introducing a speaker that was appointed to give a lecture on Lincoln in Washington D.C.
As part of his speech, Ingersoll said: “If you want to find out what a man is to the bottom, give him power. Any man can stand adversity — only a great man can stand prosperity. It is the glory of Abraham Lincoln that he never abused power only on the side of mercy.”
Subsequently, the similar versions of this phrase appeared in volumes of Ingersoll’s speeches and essays, Worthington said.
For example, the following phrase can be found in his “Abraham Lincoln, A Lecture,” from 1895 ( here ):
“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy.”
This phrase is also found in the “Works of Robert G. Ingersoll” volume III, published in 1902 ( here ).
According to Worthington, the quote had been correctly credited to Ingersoll up until the 1930s, when newspapers attributed it to Lincoln instead.
VERDICT
Misattributed. There is no evidence Lincoln ever made such a statement about testing a man’s character. The author appears to be Robert G. Ingersoll, who used this phrase to describe the 16th president of the United States on several occasions in the 1890s.
